Dollar General is founded, starting out as J.L. Turner and Son Wholesale
1955
Opened first Dollar General store in Springfield, Kentucky
1976
Exceeded annual sales of $100M for the first time
1989
Celebrated our 50th anniversary with 1.3K Stores and 7K employees
1993
Launched our Literacy Foundation to help people of all ages pursue their educational goals
1999
Recognized on the Fortune 500 list for the first time (ranked #459)
2005
